Mustard is a mandatory labeling food according to current European regulations. The whole plant can cause allergic reactions (leaf, stem and seeds).
Mustard allergy is more common in adult patients. Mustard allergic patients frequently also have allergies to foods of the same family (turnip, radish, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, grow, broccoli, mustard, cabbage) as well as other seeds (flax seed and rapeseed) and other plant foods (nuts, pink fruits and legumes). Allergy to mustard seed has also been linked to allergy to some pollens (ragweed and artemisia pollen).
In adults, mustard seed allergy can cause very serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). On the contrary, in children, only cutaneous involvement is the most frequent clinical manifestation of mustard allergy.
Mustard can also give serious systemic reactions (anaphylaxis) when it is associated with exercise. Artemisia-mustard syndrome has been described in which patients with respiratory allergy (rhinitis and / or asthma) due to allergy to artemisia pollen, have systemic reactions (anaphylaxis) and / or oral allergy syndrome (oropharyngeal itching) after the intake of mustard.
